Stewart, Theo (2022) How the changing character of warfare affects the British Army. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
As the character of warfare increasingly occupies the ground between war and peace, the British Army must be capable of operating in this area. The founding of 6th Division, a Division capable of operating in a hybrid, non-conventional warfighting capacity is a step in the correct direction – allowing the British Army the capacity to operate in the ‘grey area’ of modern warfare. Recognising that future threats come from both state and non-state actors is fundamental to the “Future Soldier” structure of the British Army – maintaining two divisions capable of operating in conventional warfighting alongside the new hybrid warfighting 6th division means that whilst opening the ability to operate in the ‘Grey Zone’ the Army does not limit its ability to conduct conventional warfighting. This thesis examines how the character of war has changed in the past century and uses academic opinion to look at how these methods of war threaten the UK – and in turn evaluate how effective the British Army’s restructuring is in combatting these threats.
