Britter, Callum (2023) ‘The Night(s) He Came Home’: Analysing the history of the horror genre through the lens of the Halloween franchise (1978 - 2018. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation approaches the Halloween franchise as a time capsule of the horror genre. In examining three principal entries into the franchise – Halloween (Carpenter, 1978), Halloween (Zombie, 2007) and Halloween (Green, 2018), this paper details how each of these entries were informed by the political, cultural and societal contexts of the time, focusing on the boom of the post-modern horror and the dawn of the slasher film in the 1970s, the slasher remake and torture porn crazes that defined horror in the 2000s and the return to the most iconic figures of horror via the legacy sequel with the new Halloween trilogy beginning in 2018. Due to the longevity of the franchise as one of the longest running of all time, each of its thirteen entries are stamped clearly as of their era. With these three particular texts, a clear line is drawn between their distinct eras as they each portray a similar story being told but in completely different ways
