Scott, Isaac (2024) An investigation into clogging resistant permeable pavements (CRP) in mitigating surface water runoff. (unpublished MEng dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This project investigated the effectiveness of clogging-resistant permeable pavements (CRP) for mitigating surface water runoff in urban areas. The objectives included analysing the porosity-strength relationship of CRP samples, evaluating the impact of pore channel diameter on clogging resistance, developing, and validating a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model, and recommending an optimal pore size. Laboratory experiments involved clogging tests, strength tests on CRP samples with varying pore sizes (4mm, 6mm, 8mm), and a CFD model simulating water flow. Findings revealed an inverse porosity-strength relationship and significant differences in clogging resistance favouring larger pore sizes. The 8mm diameter exhibited optimal clogging resistance while maintaining adequate strength. The validated CFD model accurately predicted flow parameters across pore sizes. Ultimately, the 8mm pore channel was recommended for effective urban stormwater management, balancing clogging resistance, porosity, and structural integrity. Future research avenues include long-term field studies and model expansions.
