Abstract

This research project navigates the complexities of subtitling scenes from the Dominican film 'Lotoman'. Consisting of a 2000-word transcript, a 2000-word translation, and uploaded English subtitles, the study addresses the challenges of audiovisual translation from Spanish. Focusing on the unique features of Dominican Spanish, the commentary explores slang, abbreviation of words, taboo language and assesses the role of background music. The project includes a nuanced exploration of audiovisual translation, providing practical insights and theoretical considerations. Together, subtitling and commentary offer a comprehensive examination of the complexities involved in communicating linguistic and cultural nuances to English-speaking audiences. The findings highlight that the research on Dominican Spanish is limited, and further work is needed to gain a deeper understanding of the way the people in the Dominican Republic speak, thus providing valuable insight into audiovisual translation.
