Duspivova, Magdalena (2024) A Critical Literature Review examining the research question: Is bilingualism helpful in third language acquisition?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This research project is a critical literature review using eight studies to answer the research question of “Is bilingualism helpful in third language acquisition?”. In this literature review, the interaction of bilingualism with third language acquisition is examined in two common and commonly studied bilingual environments, the first of which is the environment of bilingual education and the second is the case of immigrants or immigrant children. In addition to their common occurrence, the other reason for choosing these two specific bilingual environments to research is that studies of the environment of bilingual education generate more consistent results than in the case of immigrants (Cenoz, 2003).

The literature review found out that achieving the full benefits of bilingualism in third language acquisition might depend on balanced and advanced proficiency in learner’s L1 and L2. Furthermore, factors such as metalinguistic awareness, linguistic distance between the learner’s L1/L2 and L3, motivation, and socio-economic circumstances might influence learner’s success in TLA.
