Abstract

The present study examines young people’s understandings of the manosphere, and its impact on their perceptions of feminism and gender dynamics. This was investigated using semi-structured interviews with 6 participants. Using thematic analysis, 4 distinct themes were identified: the impact of social media on feminist perception and identification, feminist perceptions based on misunderstanding and misrepresentation, the influence and idolisation of Andrew Tate and homosociality on young men, and the emergence of “pick-me” girls and women in the manosphere. Participants situate the manosphere as a threat to both individual wellbeing and perceptions of feminism. Results of this study are significant as participants highlight mechanisms used by the manosphere, such as homosociality and the promise of social capital. Additionally, results demonstrate the potential negative implications the manosphere can have on political engagement and feminist identification.
