Abstract
The online group chat named “Fuck women, Disrespect them all” initially sparked up a social media storm in 2019 when a group of female students from Warwick University found a yearlong group chat containing instances of racism, homophobia and graphic rape threats. The story caught national attention after public outrage displayed on the Twitter hashtag #ShameOnYouWarwick. This occurred after details of the poor handling of the case came to light with hundreds of comments appearing on social media. This is certainly not the first incident of poor handling of gender-based violence (GBV) from a highly reputable university, therefore the main issue to be explored in this dissertation is how top universities, such as Warwick, are using their power and privilege to cover up and manipulate incidences of GBV in order to uphold their public image and allow the continuation of Lad Culture. This paper uses thematic analysis of 30 Twitter responses to the scandal under the #ShameOnYouWarwick thread. Some of the key themes from the findings include reputation and elitism, institutional failure and disappointment.
