Westwell, Maya (2024) Understanding risk perception and attitudes towards the contraceptive pill and the usage among Gen Z women. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This study aims to examine the experiences and attitudes towards the contraceptive pill among Generation Z females. From the initial invention of the pill over 60 years ago, it has been a liberating medical reliance for many women. However, with a rise of technology and a focus on individual wellbeing among Gen Z, there is a notion of young women turning their backs on the contraceptive pill due to concerns of risks of long term side effects, as well as questioning navigating the pressures and responsibility from a young age.
Incorporating qualitative semi-structured interviews as the primary methodological framework, this study meticulously examines the perspectives of ten young women concerning the contraceptive pill. By integrating the findings from these interviews, the research endeavours to clarify the nuanced attitudes and perceptions towards the contraceptive pill within this demographic cohort. All of this enables a new sense of understanding new contemporary attitudes towards an institution so fundamental in many women’s lives. Through thematic analysis this research discovers key themes of responsibility, pressures, and risk and how this intersects with ideas of gender roles and feminism today among young women.
