Wallace, Ava (2024) Experiences of paid and unpaid work within motherhood: a study of hairdressers. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This study aims to explore the experiences of hairdressers who are also mothers, investigating how both their role and workload as a hairdresser and mother instils feelings of exhaustion and emotional burnout, and how they balance both workloads. In investigating the gendered division of domestic labour, this study explores how concepts of gender determine what is performed by mothers and fathers, as well as the imbalance in participation it instils. Furthermore, in looking at the duties of hairdressers the study focuses on the extreme level of emotional labour that is performed by hairdressers, particularly in looking at the complex client-worker relationships that are developed as well as the frequent disclosure of personal information. Overall, though five in depth interviews with hairdressers, this study highlights the complex dynamics of emotional labour and relationships in both domestic and professional contexts within the hairdressing industry.
