Melin, Grant (2024) What role does art, culture, and creativity play in the lives of young people experiencing homelessness in Portsmouth, UK?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This research project explores the role that art, culture, and creativity play in the lives of young people experiencing homelessness (abbreviated to YPEH throughout this research project). Grounded in sociological understandings of inequality, this research investigates the motivations behind YPEH engagement with creative and artistic activities in Portsmouth, UK. Additionally, this research will assess the accessibility of artistic and creative activities in Portsmouth, UK. Data was collected from 8 semi-structured interviews, with participants who are aged between 18-25, and are currently experiencing homelessness in Portsmouth, UK. Participant interviews were analysed using interpretive thematic analysis which identified consistent themes, and patterns of meaning in participant responses. The themes identified are connected to identity, well-being, accessibility, and economic constraints.
The findings of this research project suggest that YPEH use art, culture, and creativity as cornerstones of their identity. This enables YPEH to minimise the inherent stigma attached to their current experience of homelessness, and to create support networks with others. In addition, this research found that YPEH use art, culture, and creativity to manage difficult emotions and maintain mental well-being. Findings also indicate that structural factors, and factors relating to confidence have created barriers to artistic and creative activities for YPEH. This research project also contains recommendations made by participants, which aim to improve access to artistic, and creative activities in Portsmouth, UK. These recommendations could be used by local policymakers and community initiatives to improve the support that YPEH receive.
