Sunnucks, Charlotte (2024) A critical examination of canines in law enforcement: current challenges and future trends from a user perspective. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation aims to investigate the current benefits, challenges, recommendations, and future perspectives of using canines in law enforcement from a user perspective. Its objectives also include critically examining the research evidence base regarding the current use of canines in policing and advances in technology that could potentially rival that of canines in policing.
To complete the research, an in-depth literature review on the current literature surrounding police dog handling was conducted. This was complemented by primary research in the form of an anonymous survey conducted with participants from a police dog handling background to examine the application of canines in policing from a user perspective. These responses were analysed through thematic analysis to identify the current challenges and potential for future applications of canines within law enforcement.
The research has highlighted how police dogs benefit the efficacy and efficiency of investigations and improve crowd control and officer confidence. Challenges such as education, resourcing and funding constraints, and concerns about canine attributes were also highlighted. While some respondents predict a positive future for this area of policing, others fear there will be reductions in the police dog unit due to reliability issues and technological progression. Overall, this study highlights a gap in the research of this area of policing from a user perspective, emphasising the need for ongoing research and improvements to optimise the use of canines in law enforcement.
