Smith, Eleanor (2024) Exploring the impact of gender based violence online and its manifestation offline. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Since the birth of the internet, facilitating the dissemination of free speech without restrictions, there has been an increase in violent attacks and online abuse towards women from individuals who identify as incels (involuntary celibates). There are several communities, all formed due to their common hatred/negative feelings towards women. These communities are collectively known as the manosphere. Due to the increasing use of the internet in daily life, the line between online and offline has become increasingly blurred; this dissertation therefore explores the possibility of online violence and misogyny perpetrated by incels manifesting itself offline as intimate partner violence. The risk incels, violence and misogyny has become increasingly apparent to both academics and politicians and in the UK, the Online Safety Act has been introduced aiming to restrict violence on social media platforms although this decision has not come without controversy. Similar laws have been introduced across Europe as discussions broaden on how to mitigate the effects women and girls are facing from online misogyny and incel communities.
