Williams, Benjamin (2023) Is rock music's stagnant production the catalyst for it's fall from the mainstream?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This study explores production trends in rock music of the last 30 years and implements these findings in practice with my own artefacts; recording and mixing an original rock song in 3 distinct production styles inspired by the discography of ‘Nirvana’. These styles are lightly produced, heavily produced, and the middle-ground between. I then conducted primary research through surveys, to determine whether production style matters to the general consumer. I concluded, using this data, that audiences lean towards more heavily produced rock music. I concluded that while production is a factor in the declining popularity of rock, it is not the sole reason and greater change is required to restore it’s mainstream success.
