Lee, Oliver Donald (2024) The portrayal of addiction in the gaming industry. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This study will be concentrating on how themes of addiction are portrayed within the gaming industry. Gaming has become a core segment in our society and is an important way of relaxing and immersing yourself into another realm; we cannot however avoid the unmistakable evidence that gaming has had negative impacts on society and many individuals have suffered in numerous ways. The aim of this research is to present how themes of addiction are represented in various video games, and the ways in which the industry portrays these themes and how society is currently affected. To aid this preexisting evidence I will be conducting my own primary research by producing a survey and locating the participants and the correct age range for my study. Mixed method research was utilised to collate the data for this study. Overall, gaming does alter players emotions and psychological changes do occur whilst engaging with video games, but there is not a direct link between the time spent playing video games and an individual having addictive personality traits.
