Smith, George (2024) Happy home in Robloxia: trials and challenges of positioning in the Roblox game market. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Roblox, a free-to-play game platform and game development software, represents a significant innovation in how people access and play games, placing a core focus on user-generated content and independent game development. As the industry becomes more diverse, the medium in which games are consumed has changed drastically, transforming from physical media to online platforms.
Exploring the perspective of six developers at varying levels of their careers, this study aims to tackle the common hurdles that make-or-break success on the platform, particularly homing in on how a venture-funded studio or independent developer could use strategies and knowledge to break into the market. Additionally, the study seeks to examine the platform from a critical lens, addressing both stigmas associated with the platform, and the offerings that Roblox as a development tool and platform truly provides.
