Hayes, Reece (2024) Capturing movement: a comparative analysis of animation and motion capture in visual media. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This dissertation delves into the distinctions and overlaps between motion capture and traditional 3D animation, exploring their historical evolution, technological advancements and roles within storytelling. Employing a combined methods approach that blends theoretical analysis with practical application, I developed and evaluated two prototypes respectively. The findings suggest that while motion capture offers speed and authenticity, animation provides unmatched creative freedom, essential for stylized and imaginative narratives. Through this comparative analysis, I've discovered a professional leaning towards motion capture, drawn by its technological edge and collaborative nature, guiding my future career aspirations in this field.
