Barnett, Travis Anderson (2024) Creating effective rewards in games. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This paper and artefact in combination are made with the intention of creating effective rewards through testing the effects of combinations of reward types and ways of obtaining them have on players to create a fun player experience as well as if I can create effective rewards that fit the definitions and serve their intended purposes within a tab target RPG, this will be focused around the players experience within semi open world RPG levels, exploring how various reward types as well as effectiveness of specific rewards and combinations of several rewards throughout a level affect the players enjoyment in a positive way. this project was taken out to measure my own skills in level design and boost my portfolio in order to prepare me better for industry work by developing a large project with tight deadlines. I hope to achieve this by designing a simple tab target RPG to act as a base with several iterative levels that take inspiration from the current industry standard, improving my skills and portfolio whilst also being able to research deeper into rewards within levels through a combination of others research and my own tests. This data and experience will be gained through a combination of research into previous discussions had by other professional sources as well as testing several iterative levels with a selected audience to retrieve more personal data and experience on how effectively I can present them.
