Sylvanus, Anthony Udoh (2024) An investigation of the strategies to enhance safety measures on Nigeria construction sites. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Nigerian construction sites have a complex landscape, making safety precautions essential yet frequently disregarded, which results in numerous accidents and fatalities.
The inquiry of methods for improving safety precautions on Nigerian construction sites is presented in this abstract, which acknowledges the urgent need for better procedures and practices to reduce hazards and safeguard the welfare of employees, exploring the complex relationship between construction site safety in Nigeria and examines the underlying causes of the most common safety issues. These elements include cultural perceptions of safety procedures, poor training programmes, enforcement of safety laws, and inadequate safety legislation. It is critical to comprehend these underlying reasons in order to develop comprehensive methods addressing safety concerns.
This study aims to examine the effectiveness of existing approaches, identify obstacles, suggest corrective actions, and evaluate their results. The study, which makes use of a quantitative research technique, seeks to produce insights that will support worker safety, maximise project success, and be consistent with national development goals.
The study's objective is to find gaps and opportunities for development by analysing the advantages and disadvantages of the current policy.
Furthermore, the research investigates the significance of cultivating a safety culture in Nigeria's construction sector. At all worker levels, this means encouraging involvement, accountability, and awareness. Striving to prioritise safety as a core value can be achieved by the implementation of comprehensive training programmes and providing incentives for safety procedures.
Elaborately organised, the dissertation includes a careful reading of relevant literature, a thorough explanation of the methods used, a presentation of the results, an extensive analysis, closing thoughts, and a thoughtful discussion of ethical issues. This study hopes to stimulate changes in health and safety procedures within Nigeria's construction industry by providing insightful analysis and actionable suggestions, making the workplace safer and more environmentally friendly.
