Famotemi, Olabode Peter (2024) Analyzing the occupational health and safety challenges in industrial construction in Nigeria. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Nigeria, a developing African country, has been undergoing industrialisation since its independence. The government, therefore, needs effective occupational health and safety (OHS) standards in industrial construction. However, the country's current OHS policy implementation needs to be improved, and poor safety ranks among the top challenges to sustainable building. This paper will analyse the challenges to effective OHS policy implementation in Nigeria's industrial building industry to advance working conditions, reduce accidents, and create an environment that fosters sustainable development. It will narrow down to the regulatory framework, risk assessment and control, employee training, the industrial culture of OHS, and the roles played by different stakeholders in the industry to enhance OHS. The study hypothesised that improved OHS directly correlates with employees' health safety, low mortality, and, concurrently, industrial socioeconomic contributions to the nation. The report is a quantitative study of industrial construction workers through an ultrareliable regression analysis of their answers to Google Forms questionnaires. The study will then use the analysis to propose remedies to the challenges facing the Nigerian industrial construction industry.
