Onwuka, Chijioke (2024) Need for efficient construction waste management strategies among medium-sized construction firms in Nigerian urban cities. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Efficient and sustainable construction waste management is a pressing concern for medium-sized firms operating in Nigeria's rapidly urbanizing cities. This study examines the current practices, challenges, and opportunities for enhancing waste management efficiency among these firms. Through a quantitative approach involving survey questionnaires, data were collected from fifty-seven construction professionals across Nigerian urban centers. The analysis revealed a divergence in perceptions, with 56% of respondents considering their waste management practices moderately efficient, while 44% deemed them inefficient. Notably, 34% of the firms relied heavily on landfilling, underscoring the urgent need for more sustainable alternatives.
Correlation analyses indicated positive associations between implementing best practices such as waste segregation, recycling initiatives, and site waste management plans, with a receptiveness to adopting efficient waste management approaches. Multiple regression analysis identified familiarity with best practices and cost considerations as significant predictors of receptiveness to adoption.
Drawing from these findings, the study proposes targeted recommendations to enhance waste management efficiency in medium-sized construction firms. These include raising awareness about best practices, providing support for their adoption, addressing cost-related concerns, promoting supportive regulations, integrating waste minimization strategies into design processes, mandating effective Site Waste Management Plans, and facilitating stakeholder engagement.
By implementing these evidence-based strategies, medium-sized construction firms can elevate the sustainability and efficiency of their waste management practices, aligning with Nigeria's sustainable development goals within the dynamic construction landscape. This study contributes to the evolution of contextualized solutions, empowering medium-sized firms to mitigate environmental impacts while driving sustainable growth in the construction sector.
