Said, Aya (2024) Understanding the barriers to women entering the UK construction industry: a non-traditional career choice or an untapped resource?. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This study investigates the barriers to women entering and progressing in the UK construction industry and evaluates the effectiveness of current initiatives designed to support their inclusion. Using a combination of the Critical Incident Technique and semi-structured interviews, the research collected qualitative data from industry professionals, including both male and female participants over the age of 18. Findings reveal that the industry’s entrenched masculine culture and insufficient representation of women persist as significant barriers. Despite some positive initiatives, such as diversity programs and networking groups, their overall impact remains limited, with a notable gap in effectiveness. Participants expressed a need for more robust measures and innovative approaches, including enhanced early exposure to the industry and transparent recruitment practices. This study underscores the necessity for ongoing efforts and future research to address these challenges comprehensively.
