Zahra, Dwayne (2024) An assessment of Gen Z awareness to phishing attacks. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Generation Z (Gen Z), the first generation never to know the world without the internet and considered technology savvy, faces cybersecurity threats, particularly phishing attacks. Their extensive use of the internet and social media increases the likelihood of becoming victims of cyberattacks. This study investigated Gen Z's behaviour, awareness, and perceptions regarding education on phishing, one of the most common types of cybercrime. A systematic literature review was conducted to achieve this, examining research published in databases such as Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, and EBSCO. After applying specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of sixteen studies were selected, focusing on topics related to internet usage, behaviour patterns, awareness, and cybersecurity education among Gen Z. The results obtained indicate a significant gap between perceived digital skills, often influenced by overconfidence and actual knowledge to recognise and address phishing threats. This research offers a comprehensive overview of current knowledge on Gen Z and phishing. It provides recommendations for future research, such as designing an effective training program to address specific habits of this generation.
