Wariboko, Goodness Iibi (2024) A review of how social media is used by cyber-criminals in Nigeria. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The rapid expansion of social media in Nigeria has introduced new communication paradigms, cultivating two-way interactions among friends, family, colleagues and business associates. Additionally, it has evolved into a significant avenue for income generation, particularly among young entrepreneurs across the country. While the advantages of social media platforms (SMP) are undeniable, it is equally important to recognise the adverse effects it has nurtured. This study investigates the strategies used by cyber-criminals to exploit vulnerable social media users in Nigeria. Secondary data were gathered from published papers and reports by cybersecurity companies. Data gathered were analysed, and recommendations were proposed on tips for individuals and organisations to enhance their resilience on social media.
In Nigeria, today, “cybercrime” is locally referred to as “Yahoo-Yahoo”, “Gee” (pronounced in the form of letter G) and the cybercriminals are locally referred to as “yahoo boys” or “G-boys. This study examines a substantial body of research that highlights the alarming increase in cybercrime or yahoo-yahoo crime in Nigeria. This paper also explores the strategies employed by these yahoo boys on social media to lure their victims. Additionally, it provides recommendations for both individuals and organisations on how to navigate social media safely to avoid becoming targets of cybercrime.
