Journal databases

Find journal and magazine articles. These include up-to-date publications. 

Contains academic peer-reviewed journal articles as well as professional and trade publications covering a vast range of business topics.  Also includes country overviews, market reports and company swot analyses.

• Engineering Village not in Discovery 

Engineering Village consists of three bibliographic databases, GEOBASE, GeoRef and Compendex. GEOBASE is a multidisciplinary database of bibliographic information and abstracts that indexes journal literature across the earth sciences including geology, human and physical geography, environmental sciences, oceanography and geomechanics from 1980-present. GeoRef covers geological literature from North America (1785-present), plus geological literature from the rest of the world (1933-present).

Compendex is the most comprehensive bibliographic database of scientific and technical engineering and computing research available. This may be of use to GIS students.

Compendex is great for technology subjects.

Collections of articles from a variety of humanities and social sciences. We have bought the collection which includes Literature and Film. Not only an excellent for Literature students, it is useful for subjects as far ranging as Computer Games, Theatre and Music Technology.

ScienceDirect's extensive and unique full text database covers authoritative titles from the core scientific literature, published by Elsevier. More than 2,500 journals and more than nine million full-text articles are available in ScienceDirect providing access to the physical sciences and engineering life sciences. This resource is also available through the Discovery service. A Library Guide is available.

Journal archives

Find (mostly) non-current, full-text, journal and magazine articles.

Access the full text of popular entertainment industry magazine archives, including New Musical Express, Variety, The Stage and Screen International.

• JSTOR 

An academic journal archive containing thousands of articles on a wide range of subjects. You will need to search other databases to find the most recent years.

Specialist sources

• Cecilia 

An on-line guide to music collections in archives, libraries and museums in the UK and Ireland.

Access the full text of books about quantitative and qualitative research methods and many more social science research topics.

Current newspapers

• Nexis not in Discovery 

Full text articles from many news sources and trade journals both UK and international. Archives sometimes stretching back to the mid 1980s.

• UKPressonline not in Discovery 

Access facsimile articles (including photos) from the Daily Express and Daily Mirror from the early 1900s onwards. Useful if you want the tabloid view on topical issues.

Statistics and data

• IBISWorld 

Provides a comprehensive collection of Industry reports on very specific sectors in the UK, US and China.

Includes information on music sales and distribution with powerful analytics that allow researchers to track histories, compare charts, discover new relationships – with audio and video samples, artist bios, awards, an historical timeline, and much more. 

Access to more than a million statistics from many different sources. Useful for finding industrial, economic and consumer market statistical trends. Statista take their information from many different providers across the world. Do look at the real source of the material they offer you.

Themed archive collections

Explore 20 collections of documents, including minutes of meetings and conferences, press releases, fliers, brochures, press clippings, US government memoranda and reports, private correspondence, surveys and photos.

Disability in the Modern World: History of a Social Movement encompasses an international set of resources to enrich study in a wide range of disciplines from media studies to philosophy.

Explore documents, fanzines, photos and newsreel footage to help understand these key decades when consumer culture and pop music took off and protest movements were big news.

Audio and video collections

 

High quality production music for TV, film, advertising and corporate video. Pre-cleared for worldwide and multi-platform use.  Students should contact their course leaders in order to set up an account.

This fantastic resource has captured UK terrestrial TV and radio programmes from 1998 onwards for anyone in UK universities to watch for free. You can create playlists and clips to embed in presentations, as well as putting in requests for recording. Look out for all the useful documentaries. (Not available to anyone outside the UK.)

• Kanopy 

A unique collections of films including award-winning documentaries, training films and theatrical releases on every topic imaginable. Content can be searched or browsed.

A recorded music database of more than 1 million tracks. Genres include classical, jazz, folk, blues, nostalgia, world, folk, Chinese, rock and pop.
