Each Faculty provides a range of learning support facilities to assist students to develop a range of academic and specialist skills appropriate to their area of study. These include academic writing, time management and software support.

Faculty of Business and Law

Study Support Tutors

The Faculty of Business and Law has a team of learning support tutors who are available to help you improve and develop your academic skills and ensure that you obtain the support you need in any area related to your study. Faculty Academic Skills Tutors

The Faculty Academic Skills Tutors (FAST) offer academic skills support and advice to all students, at all levels across the Faculty.

Creative Skills

Creative Skills+ offers workshops and one-to-one tutorials in many areas, from software and hardware skills through to video production techniques and drawing classes.

Student Support Adviser

The Student Support Adviser supports students who encounter academic, personal or financial difficulties while at university.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS)

Learning Development Tutors

Based in each department within the Faculty they can help you improve your writing and other academic skills whatever level you are currently at. They provide one to one support, as well as workshops covering a variety of topics. Support for Quantitative Research Skills e.g. data entry/analysis using Excel or SPSS for anyone in these 4 departments is provided by Dr Stephanie Bennett

Faculty of Science and Health

Learning Support Science offers personal or group tutorials and workshops based around students' academic skills needs. Anyone can access the service, from first years to final year Ph.D. students. Whether a student is starting, working on, or has just received the mark for a piece of work, we can help them approach their studying in the best possible way. Some of the topics frequently discussed are: planning projects, essay writing, citing & referencing, plagiarism, time management, grammar, critical analysis & writing, and revision & exam techniques.

Students can book a session with the tutor or academic skills workshop place via the website/Moodle.

Academic Skills Unit (ASK)

ASK can help you understand and develop your thinking, writing and organisational skills. It offers one-to-one tutorials, a suite of resources, including one- or two-page handouts which can help with anything from referencing to revision or even to help develop your time management skills, and a varied workshop programme addressing particular themes or skills.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

We welcome students from all over the world to our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. If English is not your first language, the EAP team can help you succeed in your academic programmes. They offer classes in English for Academic Purposes at introductory and advanced levels for undergraduates and specialist academic English for postgraduates.

Maths Cafe

Run by staff and postgraduates from the Department of Mathematics, Maths Café offers free support and help with improving your mathematical skills, and it is open to all students.

In term ­time, they run daily drop-­in sessions at three campus locations as well as a series of workshops. All students, including off-campus, distance and work-­based learners, can access Maths Café online resources via the Moodle virtual learning environment where you can also find details of times and locations.
