From 1st January 2019, external membership of the University Library will be free of charge. External members will be able to borrow up to two books at a time (previously four) and as before, will be subject to the usual fines if they do not return a loan that has been requested by another library user. Regular reference-only visitors with a free External Reference card may apply for external membership, enabling them to borrow up to two books at a time. SCONUL Access members will continue to be able to borrow four books at a time.

Access to the Library may be restricted for all external members during the academic year in the run up to the examination period. This is reviewed each year, depending on the dates of the University’s Formal Exam Period and on the use of the Library building.

From the 1st of December, we will be advertising the forthcoming change and advising anyone wanting to join as a new external member, or renew their existing external membership that they can choose to pay £50 in December for the existing external membership (with four loans) or wait until January for the free membership (with two loans).

External membership of the University Library does not include access to our networked PCs, to the University's WiFi or to printing services. Visitors may access a limited range of e-resources using our Walk-in Access service.
